Government operated organization that handles retirement and disability payments for Americans.
- Functions of the SSA include the following:
- Collecting social security contributions on behalf of individuals. These amounts are withheld from employee’s salary/income by employers and remitted to the SSA
- Pay retirement, disability and survivors benefits to workers and their families and administer the Supplemental Security Income program
